Enugu Rescue Movement Calls on Governor Mbah to Declare State of Emergency on Water Crisis
Enugu, Nigeria -
The Enugu Rescue Movement, a concerned group of citizens, is urging Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah to declare a state of emergency on the worsening water crisis in Enugu State.
The persistent shortage of clean and portable water has become a pressing issue, affecting not only the health and well-being of residents but also the state's economy, which is largely driven by agriculture. Enugu State is renowned for its rich agricultural land and produce, but the lack of access to water for irrigation purposes is severely impacting crop yields and food security.
"The water crisis in Enugu State is not just a humanitarian issue, but also an economic one," said Ezugwu Fortunate Chima, spokesperson for the Enugu Rescue Movement. "Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, and without access to water, our farmers are struggling to produce the food that feeds our people and drives our economy."
The Enugu Rescue Movement is calling on the governor to declare a state of emergency on the water crisis, recognizing its severity and impact on the state's population, economy, and food security. The movement is also urging the governor to:
1. Declare a state of emergency on the water crisis, recognizing its severity and impact on the state's population.
2. Establish a task force to oversee the emergency response, comprising representatives from relevant government agencies, experts, and stakeholders.
3. Allocate sufficient funds and resources to address the crisis, including the rehabilitation of existing water infrastructure, construction of new water supply systems, and provision of alternative water sources.
4. Implement measures to ensure transparency, accountability, and community participation in the emergency response and long-term solutions.
5. Collaborate with federal agencies, international organizations, and NGOs to access technical assistance, funding, and expertise.
6. Develop and implement a comprehensive water management plan, addressing issues such as water conservation, efficient use, and sustainable management.
7. Provide emergency relief to affected communities, including the provision of safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education.
"The people of Enugu State are suffering, and our economy is paying the price," added Chima. "We urge the governor to take bold actions and declare a state of emergency on the water crisis without further delay."
It should be noted that during his election campaign, Governor Peter Mbah promised to provide water to every nook and cranny of the state. He also unveiled a manifesto that included plans to produce 130,000 cubic meters of water, revive the water sector, and set up boreholes in rural areas. However, nearly two years after being sworn in, the governor's administration has failed to fulfill these promises, leaving millions of people without access to clean and potable water.
Despite inaugurating a 120 million liters per day water supply scheme, the water scarcity issue persists in Enugu state, forcing residents to rely on polluted water sources for their survival. The Enugu State Water Corporation, established in 1991, has been plagued by pump problems, further exacerbating the water crisis.
The allocation for the water program has been insufficient, and the efforts made so far have been inadequate. The Enugu Rescue Movement is calling on the governor to take immediate action to address the water crisis and fulfill his campaign promises.
