Bishop Emeritus of Nsukka Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Francis Emmanuel Ogbonna Okobo, has passed away at the age of 89. The sad news was confirmed early this morning, Friday, August 29, 2025, in a statement by Rev. Fr. Amuluche Greg Nnamani, Vicar General of the Diocese. Bishop Okobo reportedly died at the Niger Foundation Hospital in Enugu.
Born on November 4, 1936, Bishop Okobo was ordained as a Catholic priest on *June 4, 1966* and later became the first Bishop of Nsukka Diocese on *November 19, 1990*. His episcopal ordination followed on *January 6, 1991*, and he served diligently until his retirement on *April 13, 2013*, upon reaching the statutory retirement age of 80.
He is remembered as a pioneer who nurtured and established the Nsukka Diocese, leaving behind a legacy of community development and spiritual leadership. Tributes are already pouring in from the Catholic community and beyond, celebrating his life of service and unwavering faith. Funeral arrangements and liturgical observances will be announced by the diocese in due course.
