Hon. Cyprian Ugwuaku condemns the attempted impeachment of Nsukka local government speaker ;calls for peace and unity

The secretary Nsukka Town  Federated  Union, Hon. Cyprian Ugwuaku has condemned the recent attempt to impeach the Speaker of Nsukka Local Government Legislative Council and described it  a disturbing development that strikes at the heart of democratic principles and governance. According to him, such actions, even though may sound as a way of checkmating the leadership of the house is often driven by personal interests and political maneuvering, which undermines the sanctity of democratic institutions and erode public trust in leadership, and that   to impeach to attempt to impeach the speaker and his deputy  shows that the target was the Executive Chairman. However, he noted that the executive should also trade with caution and ensure a fair ground in solving the problems at hand.

Hon. Ugwuaku noted that the role of a legislative speaker is one of paramount importance. The speaker is tasked with preserving order, ensuring fair deliberations, and upholding the integrity of the council. Any move to impeach him should be grounded in clear, transparent, and legitimate reasons—not fueled by vendettas, power plays, or baseless accusations.
He further noted that when  impeachment becomes a tool of coercion or silencing, it ceases to be a democratic process and instead becomes an assault on the values of representation and accountability.

The secretary further opined that  the timing and manner of this attempted impeachment raises serious questions about its legitimacy as due process was not followed. .

According to him, the  attempted impeachment also risks destabilizing the local government thereby setting the Nsukka local chairman backwards towards his commitment in transforming the local local government which he has long embarked upon since he assumed office through massive infrastructural projects across several communities in the area.

LIke any other communities, peace and unity thrive on collaboration and trust between its leaders and citizens. Political instability, especially one fueled by internal conflicts, distracts from the pressing issues that need attention—development, infrastructure, education, and healthcare. When leaders are busy fighting amongst themselves, they neglect the very people they were elected to serve.

It is also important to consider the broader implications of such actions. If this pattern of politically motivated impeachments continues unchecked, it sets a dangerous precedent where elected officials can be removed simply because they refuse to toe the line of powerful interests. This is not democracy; it is tyranny disguised as politics.

According to him, the people of Nsukka must demand accountability from their leaders. They must insist on transparency in governance and reject any attempts to undermine the democratic process. Political leaders, on their part, must remember that they are servants of the people—not masters. Their duty is to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and progress, not to engage in petty power struggles, he added.
